PITTSBURG — The Sulphur Springs Wildcats ended their regular season on a sour note Saturday with an 8-3 loss to the Pittsburg Pirates on the road. They would get off to a slow start and couldn’t recover, leading to a bitter defeat.

The Pirates gained control early on, scoring a run in the first inning and taking a 1-0 lead. Pittsburg then added a pair of runs in the second inning, extending their lead to 3-0.

After a scoreless third inning, the Pirates came up with three runs in the fourth inning, raising their lead to 6-0. Pittsburg would add two more runs in the fifth inning, bringing the score to 8-0.

Following a scoreless sixth inning, the Wildcats tried to fight back with a scoring run in the top of the seventh inning. Ty Holt, Kaden Mitchell, and Alex Whittle all scored runs. Unfortunately, it was too little, too late, as the Pirates capped off an 8-3 win.

As a team, the Wildcats batted just 4 for 24 (.167) from the plate. Mitchell led with two hits, while Holt and Whittle added one hit each. Holt, Mitchell, and Whittle all scored one run each.

Corbin Argenbright suffered the loss on the mound. Over four innings, he surrendered nine hits, six runs (five earned), and four runs, tallying three strikeouts. Whittle pitched the final two innings in relief, recording three strikeouts and allowing two hits, two earned runs, and one walk.

With the loss, the Wildcats end the regular season at 4-11 in district and 6-22 overall. They will now focus on the upcoming playoffs.

The Wildcats will play the Lindale Eagles in the Bi-District round of the playoffs. Game one will be Thursday, 7 p.m. at Sulphur Springs High School. Game two will be Friday, 7 p.m. at Lindale High School. Game three, if needed, will be Saturday, 12 p.m. at Lone Oak High School.

Coverage of the Wildcats’ playoff run will be published in upcoming editions of the News-Telegram.
