Pittsburg utility restores past-due fees and service shut-offs

2024-03-26

PITTSBURG, Kan. (KOAM) - Pittsburg utility customers will once again see past-due fees and service shut-offs if bills are not paid.

The City had a cybersecurity incident in September 2023. Because of that, the utility department suspended late fees and shut-offs on utility accounts. That gave customers additional time to settle their outstanding balances without the added financial burden of penalties.

Utility payment systems, billing systems and Municipal Court proceeds resumed in early November.

On Tuesday, March 26, 2024, the City provided an update that included resuming late fees.

"As part of their updated operational procedures, commencing on March 27th, 2024, the city will reinstate the issuance of past due notifications through various channels, including text messages, emails, and phone calls. This aims to proactively remind customers of any overdue payments, and encourage timely resolution to avoid interruptions of service."

"Furthermore, starting April 8th, 2024, the city plans to resume the assessment of late fees on delinquent accounts. This step serves as a reminder of the importance of meeting payment deadlines to prevent incurring additional charges. Subsequently, on April 22nd, 2024, the city will resume shut offs for accounts with substantial overdue balances, ensuring adherence to utility payment guidelines and promoting financial responsibility among its customer base."

Utility customers can learn more by calling 620-231-4100.
