    19-year-old SLO County man killed in fiery crash on Highway 101

    A 19-year-old Arroyo Grande man died in a crash on Highway 101 that left a small vehicle engulfed in flames late Thursday night in Pismo Beach.

    According to a California Highway Patrol news release, an officer headed northbound on Highway 101 near in Pismo Beach at around 11:42 p.m. noticed a vehicle that had suffered a major collision and was burning on the southbound side of the freeway near the Mattie Road off-ramp.

    The officer found a single person lying on the western embankment of the southbound side of Highway 101, according to the release.

    The officer administered medical aid and detected a pulse, but the driver succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by a San Luis Obispo ambulance response team at around 11:57 p.m., according to the release.

    It is unknown whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash, but the incident report showed that safety equipment was not used in the vehicle, according to the release.

    The CHP has not released the identity of the driver.
