NC State loses 2 players for the season, several are questionable. Who's injured?
N.C. State retakes the field this week following its second bye, but the roster continues to take hits. Head coach Dave Doeren said Monday that offensive lineman Yousef Mugharbil and tight end Vander Ploog are out for the season. Mugharbil sustained a lower leg injury during the Wolfpack’s 31-28 win over Louisville. He recorded a 64.4 offensive grade, according to Pro Football Focus, which was third on the offensive line. Mugharbil also graded out at 70 in pass blocking. The former transfer walk-on put together his best season of college football, earning a career-high 339 snaps. “Feel terrible for him,” Doeren said on Monday. “He was playing so good, and has been such a great leader on our offensive line, and has been through a lot. For those of you that know his story, it’s pretty significant what he went through at Florida. Good news is he has a year to recover fully and have a great season next year. But, in the moment, it hurts to lose such a good player on the offensive line.” Mugharbil collided with a semi-truck during his freshman year at Florida, days before the Gators’ season opener, ending his rookie season. From a courtroom reversal in the Faith Hedgepeth murder trial to the death of a beloved former NC State football coach, here’s what readers are following from The News & Observer on Monday, Oct. 19, 2026. Handwriting evidence was a meme. A State Bureau of Investigation agent told jurors Monday that a handwritten note he previously attributed to Miguel Salguero Olivares — the man charged in the 2012 killing of UNC student Faith Hedgepeth — was actually an image circulated online, not something the defendant wrote. The admission came as defense attorneys continued challenging how investigators collected and interpreted evidence in the case. Read more: SBI agent tied note to Faith Hedgepeth’s accused killer. It was an internet meme. NCCU spending problems flagged. A new report from State Auditor Dave Boliek found that NC Central University didn’t consistently follow its own rules for procurement and travel cards. NC State a touchdown favorite at Stanford
NC State is making its first trip to Stanford since the Cardinal joined the ACC, which is to say that we’re in for a very late night of who-knows-what. Should be fun. The Wolfpack is a seven-point favorite to win this one, and if there’s any sort of turnaround on the horizon for this group, it’s gotta start right here.

How gratitude shaped Paul McNeil's return to NC State, approach to the season
Reporters clamored around Paul McNeil’s table at ACC Tipoff in Charlotte, where they held recording devices, cameras and lights. Everyone wanted to talk to the guard who stayed home — twice. The junior returned to the Wolfpack for a third season, despite testing the waters in the transfer portal. He also returned to the Wolfpack, where he will play for a third coach in three seasons. Staying after Kevin Keatts’ firing was admirable. Doing it again after Will Wade’s lone season — Wade wanted McNeil to join him at LSU — started a larger conversation about loyalty and legacy. How are people going to remember him? And for what does he want to be remembered? Gratitude. It drives McNeil in everything he does. “We’re all here, even y’all here asking these questions, that’s a blessing itself,” McNeil said last week. “Can’t be mad at it.” The Rockingham, North Carolina, native admitted the end of last season “hurt my heart” and said he took it personally. He didn’t like the way Raleigh and N.C. State’s campus felt after the season’s disappointing ending and Wade’s departure. “It was a bad feeling,” McNeil said. “There was negative energy; energy wasn’t right.” He still
