NWS Cheyenne has three-day communications system failure, relies on nearby offices
CHEYENNE — Following a failure of its outgoing communications equipment last week, Cheyenne’s National Weather Service office is back up and running as normal. NWS Cheyenne experienced a communications outage lasting around three days, from roughly Sept. 1 to Friday. The issue required neighboring weather offices to help distribute official forecasts and weather information to the public. Darren Snively, NWS Cheyenne morning coordination meteorologist, said a specific component responsible for the office’s outgoing communications failed, although he did not know which part it was exactly. “One of the parts that basically controls a lot of the outgoing communications from the office went bad,” Snively said. “It had to be replaced.” Although the outage kept the Cheyenne office from directly sending information out to the public, Snively said the office continued receiving incoming weather data, and meteorologists were able to monitor conditions. The Cheyenne office also continued developing forecasts and preparing weather products. Due to the outgoing communications issue, NWS Cheyenne was forced to rely on the NWS office in Riverton, as well as the Denver-Boulder office, located in Boulder, Colorado. The neighboring offices acted as the final step in getting information from the Cheyenne office to the public, Snively said.
