Unapproved Record – The Board of County Commissioners, Platte County, Wyoming, met on the 16th day of April 2024 in the county seat of Wheatland. Those present for the meeting were Steve Shockley, Commission Chairman; Ian Jolovich, Commissioner; Kayla Mantle, Commissioner; and Malcolm Ervin, County Clerk. Chairman Shockley called the meeting to order at 9:00 AM. Commissioner Jolovich motioned, seconded by Commissioner Mantle, to approve the agenda as presented. The motion carried. Bid Opening: At 9:15 AM the Board opened two bids for the construction of a handicap parking lot at the Courthouse. Commissioner Jolovich motioned, seconded by Commissioner Mantle, to accept a bid made by Superior Contracting in the amount of $46,972 for the purpose of building a handicap parking lot at the courthouse. The motion carried. Board Interview: Commissioner Mantle motioned, seconded by Commissioner Jolovich, to appoint Caitlin Harris to fill an unexpired term, expiring December 31, 2024, for Area 4 on the Weed & Pest Board. The motion carried. Executive Session: At 9:36 AM, Commissioner Mantle motioned, seconded by Commissioner Jolovich, to call for an executive session for personnel matters pursuant to Wyoming Statute 16-4-405(a)(ii). The motion carried. At 10:07 AM, Commissioner Mantle motioned, seconded by Commissioner Jolovich, to adjourn executive session where no decisions were made. The motion carried. Election Districts: Commissioner Mantle motioned, seconded by Commissioner Jolovich, to approve Resolution #2024-08 dividing the county into election districts. The motion carried. Public Hearing – Alteration of County Roads: Chairman Shockley called a public hearing to order at 10:30 AM for the purpose of accepting public comment on a petition made by Patrick & Sherrinel Cullen requesting to alter portions of County Roads (CR) #110-A and #182. Chairman Shockley opened the meeting to public comments. Mr. Cullen & Mrs. Cullen spoke on the request. Lee Johnson spoke against the request. Millette Jaren asked that the Board ensure their decisions to alter any county roads be entered into the property records of the County Clerk to ensure title companies can identify those road alterations. The Board said they would further consider the request at their May 7, 2024 regular meeting. There being no further business for board consideration, the meeting adjourned at approximately 12:10 PM. A regular meeting of the Board, which is open to the public, will be held Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at 9:00 a.m., at the County Courthouse, located 800 9th St., Wheatland, WY. UVA students re-create Beta Bridge memorial
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - After a secret society painted over a memorial for the three football players killed in a November 2022 shooting, students are banding together to re-create the memorial. A group of students re-painted the wall orange and put back up the message “Always in our hearts.”
Lady Dawgs split with Thunder Basin 'bolts in double-header
The Wheatland Lady Bulldog softball team dropped the first game but came back to claim the second in a doubleheader with Thunder Basin last Thursday. In the first game, the Dawgs fell 11-6. The Bolts went up 2-0 in the first inning, but Wheatland came back and tied the game in the second inning when Landri Vaughn homered to center field.
Board approves four-day week for Glendo school
After consideration of comments made by 22 attendees of a public meeting in Glendo, in addition to an initial public meeting and board workshop in early April, the board of Platte County School District No. 1 approved a four-day school week for students in Glendo. The motion passed 5-0. Connie Eller and Chase Irvine were absent from the meeting.
Problem solving integrated into direct instruction at Chugwater’s charter school
Ingenuity, creativity, problem-solving, the Scientific Method, applying knowledge and learning from mistakes – all based on the solid foundation of direct instruction of core academic disciplines. These are the skills Prairie View Community School students have been honing and applying in their first year of operation as a charter school in Chugwater. After the local school district made some changes to how they were running Chugwater schools, parents and community members started working on applying to the state to run a charter school. At the end of the 2023 school year, the district-run school closed, and the charter had been granted by the State Land and Investment Board (SLIB).
Locally owned grocery store celebrates 96 years of community
To celebrate the community and past employees of the small-town, locally-owned grocery store in Wheatland, Thrifty Foods hosted a 96th birthday party on April 13. They served cake, had cake walks, liquor tastings and special deals throughout the store. All prior employees of O.P. Skaggs System, Nixson’s Supermarket, Jack & Jill, Food Pride and Thrifty Foods were given a 10 percent employee discount on Best Choice and Always Save items.
