The arts going strong indoors as weather heats up
GENIUS: The off-Broadway absurdist comedy, 'Picasso at the Lapin Agile,' written by actor-comedian-musician-writer Steve Martin, puts Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso together in a Parisian café in 1904. One is on the cusp of transforming physics with his theory of relativity, while the other is about to ignite the art world with cubism. But at the café, the two young men are musing on the century’s achievements and some quite fanciful topics while interacting with a cast of characters that includes Picasso’s agent, the bartender and his mistress, Picasso’s date, an elderly philosopher and an idiot inventor. This playwright plays fast and loose with historical facts (it is THE Steve Martin, after all), producing laugh-out-loud results. The cast includes Dean Shorba as Einstein; Dr. Lane Hollister as Picasso; Jessica Hollister as the waitress Germaine, who has an onstage infidelity with Picasso (played by her real-life husband); Tom Sisney, Matthew Waranius, Jaclyn Krottner, Robert Jahncke, Ken Richard and Allen Bryant. Directed by Anysia Genre. Four more shows on May 25-26 and June 1-2. Saturdays at 7 p.m., Sunday matinees at 2 p.m., at Playmakers Theater, 19106 Playmakers Road, in Covington.
