    BASEBALL RECAP: Phillipsburg Keeps Momentum Going with Win Over Kittatinny

    Phillipsburg baseball gets another win and advances in the 2024 Hunterdon Warren Sussex Tournament with win over Kittatinny.

    PHILLIPSBURG, NJ -  Phillipsburg High School’s leadoff batter Kevin Burgess went 3-for-3 and scored three times and Nick Yaccarino went the first five innings to pick up the mound win as the streaking Stateliners defeated Kittatinny, 7-2, on Saturday in a Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex second round game at the Phillipsburg Athletic Complex.

    P’burg was coming off an exciting win over Easton at Coca-Cola Park in Allentown on Friday night and got right back at it for an 11 a.m. first pitch to play Kittatinny.

    The Stateliners (11-5), seeded sixth, advance to play at No. 3 High Point (13-4) on Wednesday at a time to be determined in the quarterfinal round. High Point has won five straight games and nine of its last 10.

    Phillipsburg hasn’t reached the semifinal round since 2017, and last won the tournament in 2012. But the ‘Liners are playing their most consistent ball of the season with four straight wins, its longest streak since winning five in a row in 2019.

    Felix Matos drove a pair of runs in as eight different hitters combined for P’burg’s 11 hits. Dylan Wayne went 2-for-4 and along with Eddie Weindel and Mike Bracco collected an RBI. The ‘Liners were active on the base paths as Matos stole three bases, Burgess two and Wayne one.

    Yaccarino allowed six hits and two runs, one earned, while striking out four and walking four. Bracco tossed a scoreless final two innings allowing two hits with a strikeout and a walk.

    Phillipsburg began the week with an 8-5 loss to Ridge before beating Gill-St. Bernard’s (8-3), Bernards (7-1), Easton (10-6) and Kittatinny. Another busy week is ahead with five games in six days in the next to last regular season week of the season.
