PHILLIPSBURG, NJ - Tenth-seeded Phillipsburg High School overcame a three-run deficit by scoring seven runs in the top of the seventh inning to shock host and No. 7 seed Delaware Valley, 10-6, on Saturday in a Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex Tournament second-round softball game.
The Stateliners (8-7) advance to play High Point on Wednesday at a time to be determined in a quarterfinal contest.
It was the second straight game the ‘Liners offense erupted in their final at bat of the game. On Wednesday, Phillipsburg scored all 12 of its runs in the bottom of the fifth in a 12-2 mercy-rule drubbing of Belvidere in a HWS first round game.
Ava Colontrelle, Riley Santos, and Shantalina Blake all belted home runs, with Colontrelle, a junior first baseman, hitting her team-leading fifth-round trip of the season and seventh of her career. Blake and Santos both hit their second HRs this season.
“Those home runs were huge but aren’t as crippling to the opposition without runners on base,” P’burg coach Kristin Polet said. “And we had runners on base all day.”
Seven different Phillipsburg players had at least one base hit, seven different players scored runs and six different players drove in a run as the Stateliners outhit the Terriers 12-10.
Blake finished 2-for-5 with three RBI and Colentrelle and Santos each had two hits and two RBI. Hannah Wodtke also had two hits and along with Paige Randazzo and Sara Segeda also drove in a run. Colontrelle, Randazzo and Santos all hit doubles.
Wodtke went six innings in the circle to pick up the victory allowing seven hits, three runs with two being earned and walked three and struck out four.
Delaware Valley scored three runs in the first and another in the fourth to lead 4-0 entering the sixth inning. The ‘Liners scored three in the top of the sixth but the Terriers came right back to score two in the bottom of the inning to lead 6-3 entering the seventh inning.
“Today was an incredible team win with contributions from every single girl in our lineup,” Polet said. “Our bats came alive late in the game again just like last game.”
