Investigators are searching for driver who fled the scene after striking and killing a 43-year-old Phelan man with his car on Thursday morning, authorities said.

The collision was first reported about 7:05 a.m. along Johnson Road, between Phelan and Nielson roads, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The victim was walking along the west side of the road when he was hit by a car heading south at an unknown speed, the CHP said in a written statement.

First responders found the victim lying on a dirt shoulder with severe injuries, officials said. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

His identity was not released Friday pending positive identification and notification of family by San Bernardino County coroner's officials.

Following the collision, the driver fled without stopping to help the dying man, according to the CHP.

Based on debris that fell from the car in the impact, investigators believed it was a dark gray or black sedan, officials said. It would have sustained damage to the right side of its front bumper, as well as its hood, fenders and headlights.
