PERTH AMBOY, NJ — Authorities have charged a 24-year-old city man with murder in connection with last Sunday night’s fatal stabbing death of another man, Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Police Chief Lawrence Cattano said in a prepared statement.

Detectives have arrested Luis Alberto Serrano Diaz, 24, on charges of first-degree murder, and two counts of illegal weapons possession. He is in custody at the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center in North Brunswick, awaiting a Superior Court arraignment.

The charges against Dias stem from the Sunday, April 28th stabbing death of Jason Torres, 32, also a city resident, authorities said.

Police officers, dispatched to Smith and Maple Streets just before 9 p.m. on Sunday, found Torres badly injured and collapsed on the ground.

He was rushed to Hackensack-Merdian Health Raritan Bay Medical Center where he later died from his injuries, authorities said.

Diaz and Torres were acquaintances prior to the incident, the prosecutor’s statement said. It did not speculate about a motive for the attack or say if police found a weapon allegedly used in the crime.
