MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Joining us this morning is James Johnson from NorthStone Baptist Church in Pensacola. This Thursday is Ascension Day. So give us the basics. What’s the story of Jesus’ ascension?

Guest: Well, most Christians celebrated Easter, which, of course, is Resurrection Sunday. And as we read biblical historical accounts, we understand that 40 days after his resurrection, Jesus revealed himself with many infallible proofs. And the culmination of all of those infallible proofs was seen in his ascension and Doctor Luke, Luke 24 records for us, aspects of the Ascension and then, of course, he’s also the human ten minute for the Book of Acts.

And so in chapter one, he picks up with more information about the Ascension. And essentially it is him ascending into the clouds. It’s really the culmination of his earthly ministry.

Anchor: Yeah. How does this show that Jesus had accomplished his work on Earth?

Guest: Well, yeah. Ascension Thursday is a kind of a moment. Jesus is again seated at the right hand of God.

The Father and his enemies become his footstool. And he came to Earth. His mission on the earth was to seek and to save those which are lost. Mark says to give his life a ransom for many and so on the cross, when he’s giving his life a ransom for many, he says, it is finished and it is like a deathblow to Lucifer.

And then, after showing that he is the provider of life through those 40 days of infallible proofs, the Ascension is his culmination and it’s his coronation.

Anchor: Why do you think it’s significant that Jesus was taken into heaven rather than dying, as all people do on Earth?

Guest: Yeah, that’s a good question. I think it’s significant because it shows that he has victory over death, that he is the one who can offer everlasting life.

Jesus says, I am the way, the truth and the life. And so he didn’t die. He ever lives to make intercession for us.
