GLADSTONE, N.J. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — The U.S. Geological Survey reported a 2.9 magnitude earthquake in New Jersey on Saturday morning, one of many tremblors recorded in the New York City area since the historic 4.8 magnitude earthquake on April 5.

According to the USGS, the earthquake occurred seven kilometers west-southwest of Gladstone, New Jersey at about 9:50 a.m. Its epicenter is about 45 miles west of NYC.

“We have not received any reports of damage to structures, roadways, or infrastructure,” the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management said following Saturday’s earthquake.

About 700 residents contacted the USGS to report “weak” or “light” shaking in the aftermath of the quake.

This occurrence comes three weeks after the 4.8 magnitude earthquake that was felt by about 42 million people. Officials said that the April 5 event was among the most significant earthquakes on the East Coast in the last century.

Aftershocks from large-scale earthquakes can occur days and even weeks after the initial event, though it was not immediately clear if Saturday’s tremblor was an aftershock.

A 2.6 magnitude earthquake and 2.1 magnitude tremblor were recorded on April 10 and April 19, respectively. Both quakes occurred five or six kilometers west-southwest of Gladstone, and join the over 100 tremors recorded by the USGS since April 5.
