Planted 10 years ago, the tree was planted to replace the giant elm tree located atop Ki-He-Kah Hill in Pawhuska where the Osage Nation sold oil leases in the 1900s, according to the Osage Nation . The tree was later named the "Million Dollar Elm."

Osage Nation urges anyone with information about the suspected vandalism to call the Osage Nation Police Department at (918) 287-5510.
