Hattiesburg unveils 70th large-scale mural in downtown alley
The Hattiesburg Alliance for Public Art unveiled a new mural in Downtown Hattiesburg on Sept. 3. Located in the alleyway on the wall of 307 W. Pine St., the new mural, titled "Scrape the Sky," is the 70th large-scale mural in the city and gets Hattiesburg another step closer in reaching its goal of becoming " The City of 100 Murals." "It's been a journey to get to number 70," said Kristen Brock, VisitHattiesburg vice president of marketing and programs. "We are averaging 10-to-12 large-scale murals a year, so we hope that in the next 4-to-5 years we will definitely be done with this project." "Scrape the Sky" was painted by Julia Reyes, a native of Biloxi. Reyes painted the 1,700-square-foot, two-story design over the span of one month, beginning the project by mapping out her idea for the piece. This project was particularly challenging, Reyes said, as the lower section of the mural was in a small alley and the top was above the building. "This alley is really close and then there is the top level which is far away," Reyes told the Hattiesburg American. "So I kept walking the block to kind of see the different things.
