PATERSON, NJ - Fresh off their return for the 2023 season following a brief organizational hiatus in 2022, the Silk City Sharks Minor League Football Organization has made the decision to suspend all field operations for the Fall 2024 season due to a health issue among its senior leadership. This announcement was made by the organization, who stated that the decision was made under the circumstances for the well-being of the leadership team.
"We're saddened by the decision to suspend the Fall 2024 season, but we remain optimistic about the future," Michael Harris, Vice President of Communications said. "As we've learned from our experiences since 2017, success isn't just about winning games on the field. It's about making a positive impact on the lives of our players, both on and off the field. Mentoring is at the heart of what we do as Sharks, and it's an honor to be part of an organization that prioritizes the development of young talent."
"When I informed them about my diagnosis, I said, 'Listen, guys, I won't be able to continue,'" Mark Fischer, General Manager of the Sharks said. "So, with that being said, I'm grateful to God for the strength to face what lies ahead. I trust that I'll emerge from this challenge, and when I do, I'll be right back with my fellow leaders, ready to make things happen."
Tamara Thompson, President of the League of All Leagues, has been notified of the suspension, along with the ownership body within the League of All Leagues. However, the organization plans to resume football operations for the 2025 Fall season. In the meantime, the Silk City Sharks will continue with their annual community events, including Jazz At The Falls Weekend and the Christmas Day Toy Give-Away. Additionally, they will offer executive administrative assistance to President Thompson for the 2024 season.
"We've discussed and are primarily focused on ensuring his [Fischer's] well-being," Harris commented on the possibility of someone else assuming a leadership role. "We're committed to minimizing any football-related distractions. Our conversations have revolved around this priority, as ensuring the welfare of our players is ingrained in our DNA. Our main objective is to ensure Mark's well-being. As a result, we may see placeholder teams this year."
"This was a decision that had to be made, and I believe it was the best decision given the circumstances," Jason Hawes, Vice President of Player Personnel said. "My son, Jason Jr., was actually the quarterback for the team last year. So, he and many of his teammates are understandably upset. However, we're working to find alternative opportunities for them to stay active and involved. We want them to continue playing the game they love, stay in shape, and remain engaged. I'm confident that by next season, everything will work out for the best. While it was a tough decision, it was necessary."
"Football is more than just a game," Michael Goldberg, Vice President of Operations said. "It's about raising young men who may not have had opportunities otherwise and teaching them how to become responsible adults, not just athletes. While they may start as boys, our goal is to guide them through community work and mentorship, ensuring they make the right choices. This team's success is fueled by Mark's dedication to Paterson, New Jersey. In my 12 years here, I haven't encountered anyone with as much love for the city as he has."
Understanding that the news might be disappointing to players, Hawes encouraged them to utilize this time effectively. His advice was to remain dedicated to their training, to work on improving their skills, and to maintain their focus. He also emphasized the importance of staying sharp and ready, considering the limited timeframe. His final words assured the players that they would be back on the field before long.
