PATERSON, NJ - The Paterson Housing Authority (PHA) has renamed its headquarters to honor Irma Gorham, who has served as its Executive Director for 23 years.

"Today, we're honoring an icon, a living legend who's done so much for our community," Mayor Andre Sayegh said. "In her distinguished 23-year career, she's revitalized neighborhoods, from Heritage at Alexander Hamilton to Riverside Village. And it doesn't stop here. We're going to continue honoring those who paved the way for us, like Irma. So, get ready for the Irma Gorham Housing Authority headquarters."

"I have so many mixed feelings," Gorham told TAPinto Paterson. "It's always been about the work and, of course, I make relationships, I gain relationships, but today I felt so loved. I hope it can give folks some hope that the City can be better and that we can all work together."

Gorham, a stalwart public servant, has steered the Paterson Housing Authority, the third-largest public housing authority in the state, with unparalleled dedication and commitment, attendees said. Under her leadership, significant milestones have been achieved, including the demolition of Paterson's once-troubled housing projects — Christopher Columbus, Alabama Avenue, and Fifth Avenue — transforming blight into opportunities for residents.

Gorham's leadership has spearheaded groundbreaking projects aimed at revitalizing neighborhoods and providing families with safe, affordable housing options. Notably, Riverside Terrace, a $92 million venture realized after 12 years of dedication, now offers 245 modern apartments for seniors and families.

Furthermore, the Heritage at Alexander Hamilton, a $22.5 million endeavor, has introduced 205 residences, blending contemporary design with Paterson's rich history.

"It's been a pleasure working alongside Director Irma; she's been a positive influence in my life, as has Paula [Alford]," PHA Vice Chairwoman Gemelly Caraballo said. "I look up to them both for guidance in our community and my future. The Paterson Housing Authority's goal is to provide safe, affordable housing opportunities for Paterson residents through Section Eight Housing Choice Voucher and public housing. We also promote home ownership through voucher options and collaborate with other organizations to create mixed-income housing developments. Our residents are our priority, and we're dedicated to their well-being."

"I've known Irma for almost 24 years, ever since my time at HUD. She's been a leader in building safe, affordable housing, not just in Paterson but across the region," Carlton Lewis of HUD said. "When they told me they were renaming the Housing Authority headquarters after Irma, I suggested they name the whole authority after her. She's always been there for me, and I wouldn't miss seeing her honored for anything. Thank you to the City of Paterson for recognizing her contributions. Before she was your leader, she was ours. Irma, we love you."

While initially announcing her intention to retire in 2023, Gorham has extended her service to the PHA until a suitable replacement is found. Her career spans over 40 years in housing, housing development management, strategic planning, land use planning, and public-private joint venture initiatives.

"I'm here today to celebrate Irma's life and achievements," Ernest Rucker, a well recognized member of the Paterson commnity said. "I've known her since grade school, and she's always been there for me, especially when it comes to housing issues. Irma has dedicated her life to housing, and she's been the backbone of our community. From revitalizing housing projects to upcoming projects, Irma knows how to innovate and promote. Today, we honor her by naming this building after her, a true testament to her leadership. Irma, we're proud of you and your journey from a Paterson girl to the top."

Gorham's extensive contributions extend beyond housing, as she has actively engaged with government on all levels, negotiated contracts, developer agreements, and collaborated with professionals to make impactful changes in Paterson. Her dedication, skill, and grace have earned her immense gratitude from the community and fellow colleagues.

"I want to express my heartfelt appreciation for everything she's done for me," PHA Chairwoman Paula Alford said. "She has passed the torch and poured into me, showing me the importance of caring for our residents. Her heart for the people is evident in every decision she makes. Whether it's addressing resident concerns or advancing homeownership initiatives, she has always been there to make things happen. Thank you for your guidance and support throughout my journey."
