A former employee of a Horry County medical center is claiming she was fired for reporting improper Medicaid billing and payment practices at the center. Heiby Toone says in a lawsuit filed against Little River Medical Center that he had worked at the practice for 14 years before her termination on March 25, 2024. Her lawsuit says that she had worked in several departments, including billing and insurance, before transferring to the center’s dental practice. The lawsuit claims that she was terminated after reporting apparent discrepancies she observed involving Medicaid coverage, patient charges, and the manner in which dental services and benefits were reflected in patient records. A message left with Little River Medical Center was not returned. At the time of her termination, Toone was employed as a customer service representative in the dental practice. Her duties included reviewing patient insurance information and comparing dental records and charges during patient checkout and billing processes, the lawsuit said. Concerns about Medicaid coverage discrepancies Patients in some instances were informed that Medicaid did not cover certain services and that they would need to pay out of pocket or apply for Little River Medical Center’s discount program, the lawsuit alleges.
