The glaring gap in Justin Pearson's legislative work | Opinion

State Rep. Justin Pearson has become one of Tennessee’s most recognizable voices on free speech, protest and First Amendment rights. I agree with him on the importance of those rights. But I also think it's fair to ask whether that advocacy has translated into enough legislative action protecting civic participation and public comment for ordinary Tennesseans. Pearson recently went to federal court after he and others were barred from Memphis City Council meetings. His lawsuit challenged the council’s speech restrictions and meeting bans on First Amendment grounds. The Stanton Foundation First Amendment Clinic at Vanderbilt Law School filed the federal lawsuit on behalf of Pearson and other Memphis residents. That's an important resource. But most Memphians don't have a team of First Amendment lawyers standing by when they run into trouble trying to participate in government. That's why what happens in Nashville matters. Where are the public-participation bills? After reviewing Pearson's legislative sponsorship record, I have not found a bill principally captioned "Open Meetings" or "Public Records" that he sponsored, nor have I identified him as a co-sponsor of a general Tennessee Public Records Act or Tennessee Open Meetings Act reform measure.
