25 Historic Hudson Valley Estates and Mansions With Remarkable Stories

The Hudson Valley has been home to some of New York’s most remarkable country houses for more than three centuries. Long before the Gilded Age brought railroad fortunes, elaborate gardens, and grand weekend retreats to the river, colonial landowning families were establishing farms, trading centers, and estates along its banks. The Hudson was both a transportation route and a source of wealth. Land, agriculture, river commerce, and the labor of enslaved people and tenant farmers helped sustain the households that later became known for their imposing mansions.

NYC loses more than half of pied-a-terre tax appeals, threatening projected revenue pot: ‘Out the window’

More than half of the thousands of homeowners who have already appealed the city’s new pied-à-terre tax have won their cases, threatening the levy’s much ballyhooed revenue potential. When Big Apple Mayor Zohran Mamdani and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the controversial tax on luxury second homes — or co-ops worth more than $1 million and houses over $5 million — in the city, they claimed the policy would generate $500 million-plus in revenue. But the city Department of Finance told The Post that as of Friday morning, exemption applications had hit 10,000, with a whopping 5,700 approved — and the lawsuits and exemption requests are still coming in fast and furiously. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announces a new pied-a-terre tax for thousands of homeowners in a video posted to Twitter in April — and has been taking heat over it ever since. X/SaraEisen “I think the bigger fiscal question is whether the city’s $500 million revenue estimate was realistic in the first place,” said plaintiff lawyer Ben Williams of Rosenberg & Ellis. “Once primary residences are removed and overstated market values are challenged, we may find that the amount actually collectible is significantly less than projected,”

Why Rockland County Residents Should Review Their New York Estate Plan Every Few Years

An estate plan is a set of separate documents, and each one can fall out of date on its own schedule. For families in New City, Nyack, Pearl River, and Suffern, I review plans document by document, because a sound will can sit beside a power of attorney that no longer works. I recommend a review every three to five years, and after any marriage, divorce, birth, death, move, or major purchase.

Legal trouble for Mamdani’s pied-à-terre tax is just beginning

Cross your fingers that a state judge’s slapdown of the pied-à-terre tax’s rollout marks the beginning of the end of the whole misbegotten tax. This week’s ruling came in a case challenging the burden the city placed on homeowners to prove they don’t owe the tax, which applies to nonresidents who own co-ops and condos valued $1 million or more or one-, two- and three-family homes worth $5 million and up. Not only did City Hall require homeowners to prove they resided in Gotham for more than half the year, it told 17,000 New Yorkers they may be liable for the tax, and posted a list of 900,000 city properties as potentially ripe for the hit, which the judge ordered removed. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani speaks to reporters following an announcement on the construction of Box Street Park in the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, Thursday, Oct. 1, 2026. Matt Roberts/Shutterstock While the city prepares to appeal that ruling, other plaintiffs filed two more suits contesting the legality of the tax itself. Mamdani promises to push pied-a-terre tax despite influx of new lawsuits In one case, uber-wealthy plaintiffs Wilbur Ross and Steve Wynn argue the tax unconstitutionally
