State Softball in Oxford

Oxford, AL – Oxford, in Class 6A, and Spring Garden, in Class 1A, took to the Choccolocco Park softball fields for state tournament action on Tuesday.
Avery Steward spread out six hits while striking out eight batters, and Spring Garden rallied to open Class 1A state tournament play with a 5-3 victory over Maplesville on Tuesday at Choccolocco Park.
The Panthers (30-10) play Leroy at 2:30 p.m.
Spring Garden took the lead with a three-run rally in the fifth inning. Addie Word’s single plus an error brought home two runs, and Lillian McCain’s sacrifice fly brought home the third run.
Layla Ingram went 2-for-4 and scored a run.
Class 6A
OXFORD: The Yellow Jackets bowed out with a 2-1 loss to Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa and a 7-1 loss to Baldwin County and finished the season 23-20.
Senior and University of Montevallo signee Berkley Mooney spread out eight hits with 11 strikeouts against Hillcrest. Adajiah Wilson and Reagan Sanders each had a single to account for Oxford’s two hits, and senior and Wallace State Community College signee Ashlyn Burns had the Yellow Jackets’ lone RBI.
Emma Tims-Becerra went 2-for-2 with an RBI against Baldwin County.
