Virginia was home to many Civil War battles between April 12, 1861, and May 26, 1865. Remnants from the war between the states continue to be found in the Commonwealth today. In March 2021, The Washington Post reported that children playing in the Seaford area of York, Virginia, found a Civil War-era cannonball buried two feet underground. The children took it to their parents, who called 911. The York-Poquoson Sheriff's office said the cannonball was to be disposed of by an explosion.
