OWEGO, NY (WIVT/WBGH) – A local non-profit that provides four-legged therapy companions got a boost from a local business recently.

Sassy’s Sidekicks and Rescue uses miniature horses to provide care and comfort, for the elderly, the disabled, veterans and special needs children.

It was established one year ago and operates out of G and B Farms in Owego.

Sassy is one of 4 miniature horses who, along with Callie, Ellie and Sebastian, made visits to 8 nursing homes in Tioga County last year.

Volunteer organizers Ron Wheeland and Dale Corbin are joined by several other volunteers in also providing educational sessions with special ed students and agencies who work with people with disabilities. Corbin says the horses know how to read people well.

“So I already have people, children or kids from Owego, asking me when they can come back. And this is from last fall, and when I run into them in town, they’re like well we can’t wait to come back to see Sassy,” says Corbin.

Sassy’s Sidekicks recently received a 1 thousand dollar donation from Auchinachie Services through its monthly Auchinachie Cares charitable giving campaign.

The organization is planning its Sassy’s Summer Trot event for Saturday May 25th from 10 to 2 at Hickories Park in Owego.

The public will get to meet the miniature horses, enter to win raffle items and purchase barbecue from Bam-Ba-Que.
