'It's dangerous.' Spokane Valley woman spends weeks sorting out apparent medical misidentification prompting inaccurate records

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — For weeks, a Spokane Valley woman has been working to ensure her medical records are correct. She alleges despite notifying a hospital in Western Washington that she was not a patient, inaccuracies in her medical record continued and made their way to other facilities. "I became aware that St. Michael Medical Center had incorrectly identified me as a patient even though I was not the patient involved in the medical encounter," she said. It all began in August when her husband's phone rang. "It was a registration person form the ER wanting to talk to him about me being a patient there," she said. "He verified the birth date, it was correct, name was correct. He said, 'you must have the wrong records. I'm looking at her right now, and she's not a patient.'" Because of the medically sensitive nature of the error and so many unknowns still on how this may have occurred, we are not using her full name. She recalled receiving updates on her medical chart that were inaccurate. "This is particularly concerning because the information associated with my identity includes highly sensitive psychiatric information that does not belong to me," she said.
