West Salem, South Salem football meet with playoff spot on the line
It's the last week of the 2026 high school football regular season. Believe it or not — it's already here. Salem-Keizer area football teams have worked through eight weeks of Friday night lights this fall and for some teams, it's all come down to the last game. South Salem and West Salem, for example, meet with high stakes when they compete Oct. 30 at South Salem High School. In a Class 6A Special District 1 race where Sprague (3-0 in league) has pulled ahead, there's a battle for second place. South Salem (7-1 overall, 2-1 SD1) and West Salem (4-4, 2-1) are fighting for the conference's last playoff spot. The OSAA allots two automatic playoff bids to Special District 1, meaning the winner of this game is guaranteed a spot in the bracket. "We've been to Week 9 the last couple years and the game hasn't really meant anything," South Salem coach Josh Vanlue said. "For our kids to be able to play in a big game, a meaningful game with a playoff spot on the line, what more could you ask for? For them, it's just enjoy the opportunity, enjoy the experience and let's go be the best version

Fort Vancouver had previously announced it was cancelling the football season on Oct. 20 due to "a number of player injuries and limited availability." Castro-Quintanilla said that those reasons were also a contributing factor, but he omitted the allegations because the school was in the "early stages" of working with the police.
