Faribault's valedictorian change could be rescinded
The valedictorian system meant to end this year may continue on after Superintendent Jamie Bente said he and school staff would consider expanding the honors system while maintaining its valedictorian-salutatorian system at a Monday evening school board work session. “I think we’ve heard loud and clear from at least some of our residents that this tradition of having a valedictorian is very important for Faribault,” Bente said. “I think there’s something that we can do that can accommodate both. There’s nothing that says you can’t have a valedictorian that is your highest GPA achieving student, and still recognize everyone else within that system down to a certain 3.0 GPA criteria.” Faribault Public Schools moved to sunset its valedictorian system back in 2024 in that year’s proposed student handbook. The 2027-28 senior class will be the first to have no valedictorian under this handbook. The new honors system will have students ranked as Honors with a 3.0-3.49 GPA, High Honors with a 3.5-4.0 GPA and Highest Honors with a 4.0 GPA or above. Faribault High School Principal Nate Molitor said the change was implemented to be more in line with Latin honors standards used by many colleges, decreasing academic stress and

They’ve learned about it in past years, recognizing its impact on the country and those they know. To mark 9/11’s 25th anniversary, some students last week heard more from their teachers and local first responders about their memories of that day and its lasting effects, then thanked local first responders for their service.

OHS student board rep says reaction to cell phone policy has been mixed
This year, Owatonna High School has implemented a new cell phone policy that prohibits their use in the classroom. In Monday’s school board work session, members of the board discussed the policy’s reception and the general sentiments expressed by students and staff through the first two weeks of classes. The policy has received mixed reviews from students. However, anecdotal evidence presented by Owatonna School Board Clerk Andrea Van Gelder indicates that teachers appear to have enjoyed the cut-and-dried nature of the policy and the effect it’s had on the level of engagement they’re experiencing in the classroom. “Teachers stopped me mid-week, not even at school, thanking us for that change and talking about how big of a difference it’s making in their classroom,” Van Gelder said. Van Gelder also noted that the students’ improved engagement has led teachers to consider expanding lesson plans to account for the rate at which they’re covering material. “Some teachers have told me, ‘I’m going to have to come up with more material at the end of the semester.’” Van Gelder said. “Teachers are saying they’re further along. Because we’re getting through more in the first few days of school.” School board student representative Lowell
