Southcoast Health brings advanced heart scans to Fairhaven site

Southcoast Health has launched a cardiac PET/CT program in Fairhaven that gives patients access to advanced heart imaging without traveling outside the region. The program is available at 208 Mill Road, according to a community announcement. Cardiac PET/CT scans evaluate blood flow to the heart and can help diagnose significant heart problems. The technology also gives cardiac patients who cannot participate in a traditional treadmill heart stress test another option for diagnostic imaging. “Establishing this program further demonstrates how Southcoast Health continues to lead the way in providing expert clinical care in a community health setting. This technology is used at major tertiary centers, and now we have everything we need for diagnostic cardiac imaging and treatment all in one place,” said M. Wajid Baig, MD, medical director of Nuclear Cardiology at Southcoast Health. What cardiac PET/CT scans can detect Southcoast Health is using cardiac PET/CT imaging to evaluate coronary artery disease, chest pain or suspected angina, previous heart attacks, heart failure, microvascular disease and balanced ischemia, among other conditions. Harvard public health professor and Brookline resident John E. McDonough sought to answer that question in his new book, “America’s Wrong Turn: US Health Care in the Neoliberal Era.” Published in August by Johns Hopkins University Press, the book covers 40 years of free market policy decisions that caused the shift to a profit-driven health care industry.
