A 28-year-old woman from Oregon has shared her harrowing experience of becoming paralyzed from the waist down after a freak accident involving a piano.

Danielle Drummond was looking forward to starting anew in a different state, but a tragic mishap left her with a severed spine and reliant on a wheelchair for mobility. The unfortunate incident occurred last month when she and a friend were attempting to move a piano.

Her friend lost grip of the heavy instrument, causing it to fall directly onto Danielle, as reported by WIWO . Having recently relocated to Oregon from Ohio, Danielle was immediately rushed to the hospital where doctors performed emergency surgery.

However, she was delivered the devastating news that her spinal cord had been severed in the accident, resulting in paralysis from the waist down. "I'm trying to maintain a positive outlook because I understand this is my new reality, but it's challenging," she confessed to the media outlet.

"At this point, I require a significant amount of physical therapy. I need to regain my strength." Following the injury, Danielle will require extensive rehabilitation and a home health aide.

This poses additional challenges as she was living in her van with her dog, Lotus, prior to the accident. With no family in Oregon to assist her, the 28-year-old is currently seeking a place to live while she recovers.

Returning to her hometown of Cleveland seems an insurmountable task in her current state. "I don't even know how I would get home, let alone how to transfer all the medical stuff, and I don't feel like I'm able right now to do that far of a car ride or a trip in an airplane," Danielle shared.

Her sister, Rosie Hayne, is rallying support to help Danielle secure housing and cover her medical expenses by setting up a GoFundMe campaign. "Our hearts are completely shattered. My baby sister means the world to me," Rosie penned.

"Such a resilient and wise woman, grounded and humble, her aura mirrors her beautiful soul. We will navigate this storm with abundant prayer and positive guidance. This is in God's hands now, please wrap them around her tight!"

Rosie revealed that doctors had informed her sister that she had fractured her T11 and T12, located near the middle of her back. To enhance her spinal stability, surgeons fused the vertebrae from T10-L2, the mid-section of her back, during an operation.

In an update on May 1, Rosie noted that her sister was "maneuvering quite well in the hospital wheelchair," but still required a place to live. "She wants to make it clear that she is not expecting to ever walk again."

"She has accepted the reality of her situation. But she has an amazing spirit and an overall positive outlook, focusing on what she can do." While Danielle has been left paralyzed by the accident for the foreseeable future, she said that she was "hopeful" that future medical advances may give her the ability to walk again one day.
