This year, the building at 1300 SW Boswell Ave. turns 100 years old. Over the years, it has been home to several community focused businesses that helped shape the neighborhood into what it is today. She later changed the name to Blooms on Boswell that June. What's the history of the Boswell Avenue building? But progress has been incremental in the years since, with the first financial contribution of $600 coming out of the pockets of council members. In May 2021, council members allocated $250,000 toward the fund from a $2.6 million general fund surplus. Today, the fund sits at $1.1 million. A community committee for the trust was created last year is now taking bids for affordable housing projects. What Topeka's mayor and city council members say Mayor Spencer Duncan, who has been working on the affordable trust fund since first being elected as a city councilman, said there's a long way to go.
