Pitching looks sharp for Onaway baseball in doubleheader sweep at Pellston

PELLSTON – The Onaway Cardinals look like a team that could do some damage once June arrives.

Paced again by lights out pitching and enough hitting, the Cardinals had no problem in disposing of the Pellston Hornets with 11-0 and 14-0 victories in a Ski Valley Conference doubleheader on Friday.

Just a day after being swept at home by Pickford, the Cardinals (10-5, 7-3 Ski Valley) rebounded in a big way on the road. Here’s some takeaways from Onaway’s two wins.

Pitching a force again for Cardinals

Recently returning from an injury was senior pitcher Cole Selke, who kept Pellston’s hitters off-balance during game one. In four shutout innings, Selke struck out three, allowed just two hits and walked one. Throwing the last inning was senior Jadin Mix, who struck out three.

The dominant pitching continued in the nightcap for the Cardinals, who saw senior Dylan Szymoniak pick up the win by striking out nine, walking two and surrendering no hits in 3 2/3 innings.

If the Cardinals continue to pitch at a high level, they’re going to be a problem for many opponents.

Chaskey leads solid offensive attack

Delivering a big offensive game one for the Cardinals was senior Jackson Chaskey, who finished with a team-high three hits, including a double, two RBIs and three runs scored. The Cardinals had several other contributors, including Justin Kramer-St. Germain, who had a hit, an RBI and two runs scored, Austin Veal and Selke, who each added a hit, an RBI and a run scored, and Gavin Green, who recorded a hit and knocked in a run.

Selke’s two hits, an RBI and three runs scored propelled Onaway in game two, while Luke Lovelace doubled, knocked in two runs and scored twice, Veal had a hit, an RBI and two runs scored, Andrew Gulley registered a hit, an RBI and a run scored, Veal tallied a hit, an RBI and two runs scored, Kramer-St. Germain finished with a hit and two runs scored, and Mix chipped in with a hit and a run scored. Chaskey scored three runs.

Pellston still a work in progress

It was a tough two games for a Pellston team that’s off to a slow start this spring.

The Hornets registered just two hits in game one, with one each coming from Brett Bonter and Lucas Livermore. Noah Hansen was the losing pitcher, striking out seven, scattering seven hits and walking six in five innings.

Notching Pellston’s only hit in game two was Jack Lane. Livermore took the loss on the mound, pitching two innings with three strikeouts, three hits allowed and seven walks. Jeff Delis tossed two relief innings, striking out three, surrendering four hits and walking one.
