OLD SAYBROOK, Conn. (WTNH) – Families took part in friendly competition at an annual fishing derby, honoring a local man who dedicated his life to serving his community.

Dozens of families brought their fishing gear to Crystal Lake at Clark Community Park. First, second and third place were awarded across three age divisions. A grand prize was given to the person who caught the biggest fish overall.

The fishing derby has been a tradition in Old Saybrook for years. It was renamed 10 years ago in honor of Ray Dobratz, one of the six workers who were killed in a deadly explosion at the Kleen Energy plant in Middletown.

“[He] was a great member of our community and a big volunteer of our department and youth sports,” said Jonathan Paradise, assistant director of the Old Saybrook Parks and Recreation.

His name is printed on a plaque in front of the plant with a quote that says “we remember and honor their legacy of commitment, dedication and service.”

It’s a sentiment people all across the state know.

Dobratz coached dozens of youth sports team, served 15 years on the town’s park and recreation’s commission and a decade more on the police commission.

Ray is the father of News 8’s sports anchor Erik Dobratz. His hometown of Old Saybrook organizes this derby every year to honor his memory and the spirit he had to lead and teach youth.
