Saccharine Oxymoron: Honeyrot’s Candying of the Streets of Laredo
To candy something is to preserve it against decay: fruit is saturated with sugar until sweetness becomes a means of keeping it intact. Honey preserves, rot is decay, a contradiction contained in Honeyrot’s name. In Laredo, a city whose water crisis has made infrastructure unusually tangible, the metaphor takes on an uneasy resonance. Honeyrot’s bilingual pop-punk operates through a similar transformation. The band candies the streets of Laredo, not by disguising the city’s contradictions, but by coating them in nostalgia, whimsy, and irony. Their music and visuals preserve fragments of a changing border culture while turning the city itself into material: something to perform, hyperbolize, laugh at, and care for.
