A 360-Acre Question Mark Looms over Chumash Casino

The Santa Barbara County supervisors met behind closed doors for several hours late Tuesday morning trying to make sense of last Wednesday’s announcement that the Santa Ynez Band of the Chumash has initiated the process of taking a 360-acre piece of land adjacent to Chumash Casino Resort into “federal trust status.” This opaque designation essentially grants the tribe carte blanche to do whatever they want with the land by Highway 154 and Meadowlark Road — now used for passive grazing and occasional special events such as the most recent Intertribal Powwow — unencumbered by local land-use restrictions or considerations.

No Data Center Coming to Santa Barbara’s Earl Warren Showgrounds

“We want to be absolutely clear: Earl Warren Showgrounds will not consider a data center on this property,” said Earl Warren Showgrounds CEO Ben Sprague on Wednesday. This announcement comes after the months-old data center company Global Stack U.S.A. reached out to Earl Warren Showgrounds through the California Department of Agriculture. The company has been reaching out to state owned fairgrounds across California with a pitch to build shipping-container-sized data centers inside parking structures with helipads on top. Their claim is that these centers will aid in emergency preparedness and help generate year-round revenue for fairgrounds.
