Free household hazardous waste roundup

Oakridge residents can safely dispose of up to 35 gallons of household hazardous waste on Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event takes place at the Oakridge Fire Station located at 47592 Highway 58.

Community members are invited to bring items such as paint, household cleaners, garden chemicals, car care products, arts and crafts supplies, pool chemicals, and fluorescent lamps. Residents should check labels for terms like flammable, corrosive, poison, caution, and danger.

Participants should not bring empty containers, drums, radioactive or infectious waste, asbestos, pressurized cylinders, or explosives. Empty containers can be safely discarded in the trash. Those needing information on disposal of radioactive waste, asbestos, or explosives can call 541-682-3828.

Eugene Arts Week seeks local talent

The City of Eugene Cultural Services and Lane Arts Council are looking for artists to create sculptures, 2D artwork, and projection installations for Arts Week this coming September.

Cultural Currents began in 2023 with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts' Our Town grant. The initiative invites artists, artist collectives, and arts organizations to create temporary public art installations that highlight representation and narratives for historically excluded, misrepresented, and marginalized groups. Artists of all abilities, as well as those identifying as Black, Indigenous, Asian American, Pacific Islander, Latin American, LGTBQIA+, and with intersecting identities, are strongly encouraged to apply.

Five artists will be chosen and awarded stipends ranging from $1,500 to $2,000. Artists must be 18 years or older and have a connection to the community, culture, or region of Eugene, Kalapuya Ilihi, or the Southern Willamette Valley. Youth under 18 may apply in partnership with a mentor. Submissions must be received by May 20, with finalists selected in June and installations scheduled for mid-September.
