(Neola, IA) – At the Western Iowa Conference Girl’s Track and Field Championship, the Riverside Bulldogs were able to achieve another Conference Title with a total of 150 team points. Riverside featured a total of five first-place finishes against some tough conference teams.
Speaking of those first-place finishes, Lydia Erickson was able to earn two of the five with top finishes in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. Erickson was able to run 13.17 in the 100-meter dash while putting down 27.27 in the 200-meter dash, just .31 seconds faster than second-place finisher Tess Casey of Tri-Center. Erickson felt great about her 200-meter dash and after rounding the bend, she saw nobody beside her and knew she had it in the bag.
Bulldog Carly Henderson was able to earn fourth in the 400-meter dash and in the 800-meter run. Where Henderson really shined was with a top finish for Riverside in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:07.13. She came into the 400-meter hurdles with a different mentality than the 400-meter and 800-meter run and it paid off in her favor.
Bulldog Head Coach Jared Hoffman was proud of his girls for showing up despite the weather conditions and the meet being moved a day later than they trained for. Hoffman credits the girls in the field events for their performance to start things off at the meet including Kayden Schnack in second in the long jump, Sophia Fenner in second in the shot put, and Olivia Lund finishing third in the high jump.
The Riverside Bulldogs have now won back-to-back Western Iowa Conference Championships with a big win this year and last. Coach Hoffman credits the girls for all of their hard work and for going into every meet and practice with the mindset to win.
It was a team win for Riverside on Wednesday after the girls were able to finish first in the 4×100-meter relay and first in the 4×400-meter relay. Both Lydia Erickson and Carly Henderson were a big part of that winning 4×400-meter relay, and not only were proud of their first two legs Veronica Schechinger and Elly Henderson but credit their teammates as they were not able to do this alone.
This victory for Riverside comes at a great time as they’re just a week away from the State Qualifying Meet. While things will look different next week for Riverside, the focus remains the same.
Looking at the other local teams, Audubon finished in sixth with 60.5 team points. The Wheelers featured a few top-five finishers including Taryn Petersen finishing fourth in the 200-meter dash at 28.29 while Jaelynn Petersen earned fourth place in the 400-meter hurdles at 1:12.63. They were part of the second-place finish in the 4×400-meter really at 4:21.85 and another second-place finish in the 4×100-meter shuttle hurdle at 1:10.66. In the field events, Audubon’s Harlow Miller was able to clinch fourth in the high jump with a jump of 4’8″.
Falling right behind Audubon was the AHSTW Lady Vikes who finished in seventh with 51 team points. The Lady Vikes featured the 800-meter sprint medley champs with a time of 1:54.75 with Caitlyn Dills, Loralei Wahling, Brooklyn Buck, and Bella Lamp leading the way in the race. Other top five finishers included Makenna Paulsen in fifth in the 400-meter hurdles at 1:12.66.
