SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Thursday marks exactly three years since a father, Gregory Turnage, was killed by a hit-and-run driver on Mother’s Day in Oakland, the victim’s family said. Turnage woke up on Mother’s Day 2021 and prepared breakfast-in-bed for his son’s mother.

The 41-year-old father later went on a walk around his neighborhood when tragedy struck. A white Lexus veered onto a sidewalk and crashed into him.

The Lexus driver was Timothy Hamano, a 67-year-old Bay Area wealth manager. Hamano ran from the crash scene, leaving his injured wife and the fatally injured pedestrian behind, investigators said.

This week, the victim’s family found out that the driver will serve zero days in jail and prison for his sentence.

As the case worked its way through the courts, Hamano spent the past three years out of jail under home confinement terms. He pleaded no contest to felony vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run.

On Wednesday, an Alameda County judge sentenced the wealth manager to a six-year term, with three years credit for his time already served at home in Piedmont. Judge Kimberly Colwell allowed Hamano to serve the remainder of his sentence at home, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Turnage’s partner, Angie Brey, delivered an emotional victim impact statement at Wednesday’s sentencing hearing.

Brey told Hamano that he is an “entitled coward who lacks humanity and a moral compass. May 9 will mark three years since your selfish choices and blatant disregard for human life violently ended the life of my partner, Gregory Lou Turnage Jr. You're the type of man who has such little regard for others that you not only spent the day drinking and got behind the wheel, but you ditched your own wife and your dying victim at the scene of your crime.”

The victim’s 13-year-old son is now forced to navigate the rest of his life without guidance from his devoted father, Brey said. “Greg was the greatest father, that is why I fell in love with him,” she told KRON4.

Brey’s statement in court continued, “You left a young boy fatherless at a pivotal point in his life. And the fact that you have successfully managed to snake your way out of any real repercussions only further complicates our grief and deepens our rage.”

Brey KRON4 that Hamano’s wife wrote in her police statement that Hamano had spent the day drinking in San Francisco before driving to Oakland and crashing the Lexus.

According to a wrongful death lawsuit filed by law firm Callaway & Wolf, on May 9, 2021, “Mr. Hamano celebrated Mother's Day and consumed alcoholic beverages at two or more locations, including multiple beers at a San Francisco golf course before consuming Bloody Mary's and wine at a San Francisco restaurant.”

The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office said prosecutors did not offer Hamano a plea deal, however, his defense attorneys negotiated one with the court.

The case’s outcome was a failure of justice in the criminal justice system, Brey said.

She told Hamano in court, “Now you get to walk away from this with your life, remain at home, be a part of your family's lives, and put this all behind you as a brief inconvenience. How nice for you. We're walking away with an excruciating hole in our lives, no justice, and no closure.”
