Vang-Piker fundraiser scrutiny, rail shake-up: What Sacramento talked about Oct. 5-11
Sacramento neighbors had plenty to argue about this week — a congressional fundraiser that split the City Council, a shake-up at California’s high-speed rail agency, an ICE arrest at a community college, Kamala Harris swinging through town and a warning from two legal scholars about what could happen after the 2026 election. Here are the five Sacramento Bee stories that drew the most reader comments from Oct. 5-11. A Sacramento councilmember calls out Mai Vang over Hasan Piker fundraiser Congressional candidate and Sacramento City Councilmember Mai Vang drew a sharp rebuke from colleague Lisa Kaplan over her upcoming campaign fundraising stream with Twitch personality Hasan Piker. Kaplan, who is Jewish and represents North Natomas, said she stood in “absolute defiance” of the “toxic, misogynistic rhetoric propagated by online personalities like Hasan Piker,” accusing him of building a brand on “sexism, antisemitism and the degradation of women.” Vang, who is challenging longtime Rep. Doris Matsui in the 7th Congressional District, pushed back. “Going on someone’s show doesn’t mean adopting their views — it’s an opportunity to talk directly to voters that establishment politicians have left behind, especially young people,” she said. »» Read the story, see the comments High-Speed Rail board

SacCity: freeways broke the grid
As mentioned in no grid: the original sin of city planning, freeways are one of the features that constrain the grid system of the central city Sacramento. Unlike the rivers, which are a natural feature, the freeways were designed to break the grid. This was a design choice by Caltrans to priority freeway travel over local travel. It doesn’t mean freeways are a bad idea, they are good and bad, but the decision to break grid streets was an intentional one, and a mistake that has harmed the city.
