OAK HILL, WV (WVNS) – In most classrooms and presentations, you will see adults standing behind the podium. For this conference, the kids took the reins to teach the adults a little something about teen mental health.

Students from Oak Hill High School’s ‘Oakheal’ Outreach Team, hosted a Student Mental Health Conference on Wednesday, March 27, 2024.

The goal for this conference was to help other schools and counties establish student-led mental health support programs.

“It’s just to put our voice out there and show all the schools and let them know that they can have what they have and that it doesn’t need to be restricted to one area,” said Ella Swain, a Media Tech member of the team.

Project Aware therapist, Tiffanny Gray, says that students are more likely to shy away from their parents about mental health issues. Gray said that students may feel more comfortable discussing these topics with peers. Gray encourages parents to listen to their children and keep an open mind.

“As for adults, just listen to your kids; they usually know what kids like and what kids do. So, give them that floor or that foundation point to where they can impact other schools,” said Gray.

Students, counselors, educators, and administrators from 17 counties filled the conference room. Staff will continue to network with the Fayette County team and other school members to develop and implement plans.
