Nutley Golfers Continue To Improve This Spring

Some fans of the PGA or LIV Tours may view golf as an individual activity, just the golfer (along with his or her caddy) trying to navigate a course for the lowest score possible on a given day.
But, at the college and certainly high school levels, golf is very much a team sport.
Locally, the Nutley High School golf program takes advantage of every opportunity, be it a practice round, tournament or dual match, to improve on the links.
The Raiders are scheduled to face Belleville at Hendricks Field Golf Course on Wednesday, May 8.
“The collective growth of the golf team has been evident in each match, with a sense of confidence among the players,’’ Nutley head coach John Alessio said. “Notably, Shane O’Connor's remarkable transformation from limited varsity exposure last year to a key low scorer and leader this year is a testament to the team's overall progress.’’
Leadership has indeed been a valuable commodity for the Raiders this spring.
“The standout performances of athletes such as Jayden Bollander and Cameron Anderson have been truly remarkable, marked by their exceptional dedication and improvement in both skills and work ethic,’’ Alessio said. “Their passion for the sport and commitment to the team shines through as they eagerly embrace every opportunity to hit the golf course.
“Nicholas Scheidel’s progression has been equally impressive, showcasing his relentless efforts in honing his abilities throughout the winter season. His emergence as a reliable leader, particularly in crucial moments, is evident in his enhanced short game. Notably, in putting and chipping which has translated into his match scores.’’
Nutley has set forth some strong goals for the season.
“Looking ahead, we aspire to achieve a .500 record,’’ Alessio said. “We continue to focus on refining their short game (putting and chipping).
“As the season unfolds, the emphasis remains on fostering individual growth and bolstering collective confidence in their abilities. The enthusiasm of the student athletes for their daily training sessions speaks volumes about their genuine passion for the sport and their unwavering commitment to personal development.’’
The Raiders competed in the Essex County Tournament at Weequahic Golf Course in Newark on Monday, April 29.
“With each passing day, this team will continue to flourish, setting the stage for continued growth and success in the journey ahead,’’ Alessio said.
