Norwich ― Norwich firefighters used a harness and rope late Wednesday afternoon to rescue a 57-year-old man who had fallen about 30 feet down a steep cliff face near Uncas Leap at Yantic Falls.

The man was not injured, said Battalion Chief Marc Benjamin, but just couldn’t get back up the cliff.

Benjamin said a resident had called Norwich Emergency Dispatch at 5:35 p.m. to report they’d heard the man yelling for help from the west side of the falls, but didn’t know his exact location.

Firefighters responded to the area and found the man near 177 Yantic St., about 100 feet off a path at the bottom of the cliff, he said.

After the man was lifted up, he was evaluated by American Ambulance personnel and refused further medical treatment, Benjamin said.

The rescue took about eight minutes, he said.
