State troopers on Wednesday identified the 19-year-old who died last month in a shooting by law enforcement after a traffic stop that began in Northport and resulted in a cross-county police pursuit.

Gilmar Tista-Morente, of Nashville, was killed in the shooting, which occurred in Greene County on April 25, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency's State Bureau of Investigation.

The ALEA SBI is investigating the shooting, which involved multiple law enforcement agencies.

No one with the Northport Police Department will be involved with the investigation into the shooting, according to ALEA.

At around 11:15 p.m., officers with the Northport Police Department conducted a traffic stop in the 4000 block of McFarland Boulevard in Northport. During the interaction between the driver of the car and police officers, shots were fired and the vehicle fled from the scene, said Capt. Jack Kennedy, with the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit.

A pursuit of the vehicle began, which eventually involved several law enforcement agencies, and continued around Tuscaloosa County.

The pursuit ended in Greene County, where the vehicle crashed near Exit 52 on Interstate 20/59.

"Initially the pursuit began in Tuscaloosa County but eventually the suspect fled into Greene County. The pursuit ended after the suspect’s vehicle struck another vehicle on U.S. 11 near the 56 mile-marker at exit 52 in Greene County," said ALEA in a news release.

Officers and deputies from several jurisdictions ― including the Northport Police Department, the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency and the Eutaw Police Department ― approached the vehicle and reported that the driver had a firearm, the release states.

"After the collision, the suspect exited the vehicle, brandished a firearm and was struck by gunfire from officers on scene. No officers were injured during the course of the incident," the release states.

The driver, Tista-Morente was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment where he later died from his injuries.

Tista-Morente was wanted by the Nashville Police Department on felony warrants in connection with charges of attempted criminal homicide and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

No further information was provided available and the investigation is ongoing.

Once complete, the findings will be turned over to the Greene County District Attorney’s Office.
