If You Go “Three” performs at the Northfield Arts Guild Theater on Sunday, May 5 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased by calling 507-645-8877 at northfieldartsguild.org at the Guild Gift Shop. a314ebd6-ccf2-4561-8425-220c7ca118b0

Glorious harmonies, tasty piano grooves and spectacular singing is how the all-female trio “Three” has been marketed to Northfield music lovers.

The trio showcases the vocals of Lori Dokken, Rachel Holder and Judi Vinar.

Three is the brainchild trio of local Twin Cities musicians Judi Vinar, Rachel Holder and Lori Dokken. These three artists have not only been friends for many years but have also been colleagues in a diverse array of musical groups and productions.

Three represents so many things,” said Dokken in a phone interview last week. Three means past, present and future; beginning, middle and end; body, mind and soul; and Judi, Rachel and Lori. The group likes to choose songs generally in the pop vein but their styles and genres range widely from folk to blues, rock to jazz to R&B and swing.

“We fit together like one voice,” she said. “The skills we bring together make our music tender, simple, comfortable, beautiful.”

“Our themes run the whole wheel of emotions,” said Dokken. “We add in different textures that honor the song but spotlight the singer.”

Dokken explained that the singers like to be “casually professional” when they’re on stage in small venues like Northfield’s Guild Theater. “We’re not too produced,” she said. Trio members often interact with the audience to talk about a song, reflect on a mood, or share a backstory.

For this show, Three will also be showcasing a few songs from their upcoming show entitled “The 3rd Degree.”

“The 3rd Degree” is a celebration of some of the greatest vocal trios such as The Chicks, Wilson Phillips, The Ronettes, The Bee Gees, Emmy Lou, Linda & Dolly, The Wailin’ Jennys, Lucius with Brandi Carlile, Lambert Hendricks and Ross and special tribute to Motown’s session trio, the Andantes.

Pauline Jennings, performing arts director at the Northfield Arts Guild, said that she was thrilled the Guild’s 411 Series was once again bringing a group of Twin City heavy-hitters to our intimate theater.

“Close up, there really is no better way to experience Three, a dynamic, soulful trio of women musicians,” said Jennings. “From three part spot-on harmonies in the bluesy tune “Papa Come Quick” (Bonnie Raitt) to the haunting layered singing in “Scarborough Fair” (Simon & Garfunkel), Three covers a wide range of genres that will tickle your soul.”

Jennings said the women know how to put on a show and are all experts in their field evidenced by the fact that they are often solicited to play A-list rooms like The Ordway and The Dakota.

According to the Dakota website, “Three brings together a triad of diverse voices that are skilled in multiple styles and genres and the end product is an incredible performance that unites them into a singular sound – rich in color, character, confidence and the sonic seasoning of experience.”

Jennings suggests that tickets to the next 411 concert would make for a lovely early Mother’s Day gift, date night, or Girls’ Night Out. “Do yourself a favor and get tickets to see these very talented women,” said Jennings.
