On April 24, members of the community and supporters of The Key, turned out for an art exhibit at the Northfield Arts Guild. The exhibit “Strengthening Youth Through Art” celebrates the art, resilience and creativity of the young people in our community.

For Kelli Podracky, executive director of Northfield Union of Youth, the event was a testament that went beyond providing art opportunities; it represented how The Key provides support and a sense of belonging to our youth.

“It’s about nurturing their talents, empowering their voices, and creating a community where they can thrive,” said Podracky.

But, the emotional tug also included the community’s unwavering support for these young artists, many of whom may not have supportive families to rely on, she said.

As the evening unfolded, Podracky said she was moved by the overwhelming sense of community spirit. Jim Evans, one of the original founders of The Key, was among the attendees.

“The Key did it again,” said Evans. “The art show presented at the Guild April 24th, demonstrated amazing creativity. As usual, the ideas came from the youth, while supportive adults facilitated their efforts”

Podracky said seeing Evans at the event witnessing the growth and success of NUY and The Key after 30 years, filled her with an indescribable sense of pride and honor.

“As I left the event that night, my heart was full,” said Podracky, “Full of gratitude for the community that came together to support our youth, full of admiration for the incredible young artists who poured their hearts into their work, and full of determination to continue championing their cause.”

Trinity Blowers, Art Coordinator at The Key, art is so incredibly vital to the minds of young people and encouraging them allows them to dream about what could happen. “In doing so, you are telling them their dreams are achievable and worth pursuing,” she said. “Creating art helps alleviate numerous forms of stress, social pressures, it allows for and encourages self expression.”

Michael Johnson, executive director of the Northfield Arts Guild, said being able to offer these opportunities for youth to express themselves through art is essential to the health of our community. “When young people have opportunities to express themselves and their creative ideas, we all benefit,” said Johnson.
