    Northfield boys tennis picks up win over Big 9 rival

    The Northfield High School boys tennis missed two meets over the past week due to weather conditions, but the Raiders were still able to secure a 6-1 victory over Big 9 rival Austin on Thursday, April 18 on the courts in Northfield.

    Earlier in the week, Northfield’s scheduled match at Winona was postponed due to weather and will be replay on May 4. In addition, Northfield was also slated to host Rochester Mayo on Friday, April 19 but that match was also postponed. At this point, no make-up date has been posted for the Rochester Mayo match.

    In play against Austin, Northfield just missed a shutout as the Raiders’ lone loss was a closely contested match at second singles between Jackson Hessian and Austin’s Nathan Danielson (6-4, 4-6, 11-9).

    At first singles, Northfield’s Blake Simon battled back to gain a 4-6, 6-4, 10-4 win while Theo Menk rolled with a 6-2, 6-1 win at third singles and Eli Bengtson won 6-2, 6-0 at fourth singles.

    The Raiders also dominated play in doubles action as Joe Grant and Carter Borovsky won a 6-1, 6-3 decision at first doubles. Reuben Menk and Parker Sneary posted a 6-1, 6-0 win at second doubles and the third doubles duo of Kyle Bulfer and Dyson McBroom won 6-0, 6-1.

    Northfield played a Big 9 match at Mankato East on Tuesday, April 22 and will return home on Thursday, April 25 for a match against Mankato West at 4:45 p.m.
