A fundraiser has been launched for a Northfield family whose toddler fatally choked on a grape.

Two-year-old Abner Ezequiel De Jesus Morales — also known as "Chubby" or "Oso" to his family — passed away on Saturday.

"The family is in complete shock not knowing how to react to such a horrible tragedy," the GoFundMe reads.

According to his obituary, Abner had a "joyful spirit and a simile that could light up a room."

"Abner will always be remembered as a loving and kind soul with a funny flair that brought laughter to everyone around him. He had a deep affection for his puppies, whom he would often cover with kisses and snuggles. His playful nature shone bright when surrounded by his stuffed animals and when spending time with his adored family," the obituary reads.

A funeral service has been planned for Thursday morning at the Bierman, Benson & Langehough Funeral Home in Northfield.

The GoFundMe is raising money for funeral arrangements. As of Wednesday morning, it has raised nearly $4,000 of its $10,000 goal.

Grapes are one of the most hazardous foods for young children due to the risk of choking.

According to Healthline , medical experts suggest to spoon-feed peeled grapes, either sliced into quarters or blended, to babies who haven't yet developed chewing skills or the pincer grasp around 9 to 10 months old.

"Then, as they near their second birthday, try offering grapes sliced in half lengthwise, keeping a watchful eye for signs of choking," Healthline says.

Additionally, if you're using grapes with seeds, be sure to remove them before giving them to your child, health experts say.
