CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – We recently saw some spring flooding across parts of western Massachusetts. While river levels have come down, there are with some things to keep in mind if you’re thinking about going out on the water.

There are still some swift currents and the water is still very cold. The water temperature of the Connecticut River right now is only in the 40s.

If you fall in the water, hypothermia can occur in just a matter of minutes. If you are going to be out on the water, you should take precautions. Wear a life jacket, know what the water temperature is and always let someone know where you’re going to be.

According to the CDC, about half of the drowning victims in the United States each year die from the effects of cold water.
