Westchester County Executive Urges Residents to Prepare for Hurricane Season with Emergency Plans and Critical Supplies
Westchester County Executive George Latimer is urging residents to prepare for severe weather by reviewing their emergency plans and stocking up on critical supplies. Hurricane season runs from June 1 through December 1, and severe storms often cause major flooding and widespread power outages. Latimer advised residents to have flashlights, batteries, canned and non-perishable foods on hand before any significant storm is in the forecast. In 2021, five Westchester County residents lost their lives due to severe flooding from a major summer storm. County emergency responders recommend residents set aside several days’ worth of non-perishable food, water, and medicine, and keep other critical supplies nearby like flashlights and batteries in case they are stuck in their homes without power. Residents should also have a “go-bag” ready in case they are asked to evacuate on short notice during an emergency.
