Dodging a few showers and storms for Derby Day
As expected it turned out to be a rather damp and dreary Oaks Day across Central and Eastern Kentucky, along with at Churchill Downs in Louisville. It was a far cry from the perfect weather of Wednesday and Thursday with clouds, spotty showers and temperatures a little cooler. Fortunately the heaviest rain fell early in the day with more scattered rain through the afternoon as temperatures struggled to get into the low 70s for afternoon highs. The rain gear definitely came in handy Friday and this will be a common theme in the coming days as the unsettled weather pattern sticks around.

Hoover High School junior wins Major League Fishing tournament, qualifies for nationals
North Canton's Hoyt Nicely was part of the winning team at the Major League Fishing Abu Garcia High School Fishing event last weekend in Alabama. Nicely, a junior at Hoover High School, and his partner Connor Bower of Aurora brought five bass to the scale weighing 20 pounds, seven ounces to take first place in a field of 70 teams. The no-entry fee tournament was conducted at Lake Guntersville on April 27.

Athletes from Copley and St. Vincent-St. Mary high schools won the voting for the Summit County High School Athlete of the Week for April 22-28. Alexis Walker of Copley is the girls winner and Connor Christie of STVM wins for the boys. Walker is a softball player and Christie is a baseball player. Walker received 52.78% of the votes cast. Christie received 65.24% of the votes cast.
