Man jumps to death off Rome cellphone tower
ROME — One person died when he jumped off a cellphone tower on Erie Boulevard West in Rome Friday afternoon, according to emergency officials. Authorities said the victim, whose identity was not released, notified his family about his intent to jump and the family called 911 at about 5:22 p.m. The man was found climbing the cellphone tower on Erie Boulevard West at South Levitt and South Charles streets. Authorities said he jumped shortly thereafter and died from his injuries.

ROME — A 39-year-old woman is accused of stealing a vehicle that had been left running outside the Rome Health Emergency Room, according to the Rome Police Department. Police said Tara L. Vaughn, of Rome, stole a Volkswagen Jetta that had been left running outside the emergency room entrance at Rome Health around 1:15 a.m. March 2. Police said the victim was at the hospital to pick up a friend and had left their vehicle outside. Police said Vaughn was also at the hospital.

Madison County, N.Y. — Two men have been arrested after several police agencies spent hours Wednesday investigating a reported abduction of a woman near Chittenango Falls. Around 10:40 a.m. Wednesday, Madison County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to Route 13 north of Chittenango Falls on an abduction call, said Samantha Field, a spokesperson for Madison County. People calling 911 said a woman claimed she had been abducted, she said.

Unknown substance at Mohawk prison in Rome ruled safe
ROME — A suspicious substance found at the Mohawk Valley Correctional Facility in Rome on Friday was determined to not be dangerous or hazardous. Assistant Fire Chief Michael Liddy said there was an unknown substance “located inside the facility,” and a staff member called 911 shortly before 9:30 a.m. Friday. The Rome hazardous materials team responded, and one staff member exposed to the substance was decontaminated and taken to a local hospital “as a precaution,” as per protocol.
