Students, staff blindsided by Oxnard beauty school closure
After decades of preparing the next generation of professionals in the beauty industry, Modern Beauty Academy in Oxnard closed Aug. 28 with no advance notice. Last month, students and staff showed up to the 699 S. C St. campus to begin their day only to find the front doors locked and a sign informing them that the school was permanently closed. The abrupt ending came the same day the company filed for bankruptcy after allegedly failing to pay staff for several months. “It’s been here for years, and it’s a pillar of the community, so for them to close it like that was just dead wrong,” manager Kalven Harrison said. “It’s a horrible loss, and it has affected and hurt a lot of different people.” The institution had about 70 students and 15 employees across its cosmetology, barbering and nail programs, according to sources. Denise Hooper, owner of Modern Beauty Academy, declined interview requests and did not respond to emailed questions, instead providing a written statement. “We regret any inconvenience and hardship this may have caused our students, employees, instructors and their families but believe this course of action was necessary based on the company’s current financial condition,” she wrote.

Ventura school closures take center stage
It was supposed to be the final meeting for the volunteer committee that's been studying which schools in Ventura might be closed next year. But after three hours on Sept. 17 — and after hearing from scores of parents, teachers and students dedicated to saving their schools — the committee hadn't narrowed its list of recommended potential closures at all. In fact, it had expanded it, adding back some schools that it had previously decided it would not recommend closing. The group will hold at least one more meeting, and perhaps two, before it turns the matter over to the Ventura County Unified School District Board of Trustees for a decision. The committee's job is to come up with a ranked list of which schools would be the best choices to close; the board will then decide how many schools, and which schools, it wants to close. The 23-member School Closures Advisory Committee has been meeting monthly since March, deciding on the criteria it will use and gathering data on the district's schools. In August , it began to discuss which of the district's 17 elementary schools it would recommend for closure, and that discussion continued on Sept. 17. The
